FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Why Do I Need an Engineer for My HVACR/P Project?

Most states, by law, require a licensed engineer to generate stamped drawings for projects that add or modify ventilation systems, especially those used for comfort heating and cooling.

Why Should I Hire Mechanical Edge?

We have been engineering and designing HVACR/P systems for 30+ years and have worked in a variety of different industries and clients.  We bring this breadth and depth of experience to the execution of your project.

What Kind of Projects Does Mechanical Edge Work On?

We work on any project that requires heating, cooling, ventilation,  refrigeration for both comfort and environmental control.  We also design plumbing systems for MEP packages.

Yes.  We are licensed and insured as engineers in Ohio, Kentucky,  and North Carolina.

How Much Do Mechanical Edge Services Cost?

We provide our services specific to your project on a lump-sum, time-and-materials, or hourly basis. Our overhead is low and we charge only for the work we do.  You may be surprised to learn that we don't charge a lot higher than your auto mechanic.

When Do I Need to Get Mechanical Edge Involved?

Once a customer recognizes the need for a new HVACR/P system or discovers a problem with a current system-e.g., witness a cooling problem during the Summer season rather than during the Winter -, it is best to call us sooner rather than later!

For new systems or new buildings, we prefer to  work with the assigned architect to ensure that the mechanical systems are integrated into the building from the start rather than trying to figure out how to fit it all in after the fact.

What Type of Facilities Does Mechanical Edge Work With?

The commercial list includes restaurants, bars, offices, schools, churches, warehouses, and retail-- to name just a few.

The industrial list includes automotive, beverage, chemical, food, paper, and steel as examples.

What Type of Systems or Equipment Does Mechanical Edge Work With?

We design and troubleshoot any system that heats, cools, ventilates, or refrigerates. We take on each problem or project on without bias and apply our expertise to provide the best solution. Our constant goal is to stay current with what various manufacturers offer for HVACR/P equipment, what the Codes require for health and safety, and what the industry is doing to stay competitive and efficient. So the list could include chillers, boilers, air handlers, VRF, unit ventilators, VAV systems, geothermal, heat pumps, economizers, energy recovery units.....the list goes on and on.

What Is the Difference Between Design-Build and Design-Bid-Build?

Design-build integrates the engineering and construction as one team to provided a turn-key installation for a client. We work as the designer with the client's preferred contractor to complete the design which often results in a faster overall schedule and smoother project delivery for the client.

Design-bid-build (aka Bid-Spec) involves separate teams-- one  does the design and  another does  construction.   We complete the design directly for the client then they shop the installation (bid) from various contractors.

We are willing to discuss both approaches to your project.

What Is Mechanical Edge Doing for the Environment?

We believe in protecting the environment. We minimize travel by taking photographs and videos during site visits. We combine stops when traveling. We volunteer for clean-up events in our community. Our business is paperless. We size equipment to match the loads and specify the most energy- efficient equipment our clients can afford. We perform life-cycle cost analyses to help our clients make informed decisions based on all costs including capital, maintenance, and energy.

What Motivates Mechanical Edge?

Donating our time and professional services is important to us, and we have donated our time to the YMCA, the Boy Scouts of America, Carolina Mountain Land Conservancy, city and river clean-up events, and inner-city music education centers.

Does Mechanical Edge Sell, Service, and Install HVACR/P Systems?

No.  We just design them.  But we are happy to refer you to a supplier or contractor who might be able to help you out.

What are Mechanical Edge's Deliverables?

Typically our designs are delivered as stamped drawings. With stamped drawings, the proper permits and inspections can be obtained for the project. The work can be competitively bid out based on the drawings. By placing a stamp on the drawings, the engineer becomes the "engineer of record" and stands behind the design.
